SIOUX COUNTY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Hopes for a new regional airport in northwest Iowa are getting a boost from Washington. The federal government has awarded the Sioux County Regional Airport Agency $1,187,563 to buy land near Maurice needed to construct the airport.
The proposed Sioux County Regional Airport has been on the drawing board for more than a decade. It would serve Orange City and Sioux Center. Both communities have airports of their own, but the new airport would have a longer runway to serve business aircraft.
In announcing the funding, Iowa Senator Tom Harkin said, "This is an important part of the infrastructure needed to keep the Sioux County economy expanding and adding quality jobs."
Harkin is a member of the Senate panel that funds transportation initiatives.
