UPDATE: Some Nebraska wildfire evacuation orders lifted

Posted:
CHADRON, Neb. (KTIV) -

Authorities have lifted an evacuation order for some northwest Nebraska residents whose homes had been threatened by wildfire.

The Rocky Mountain Area Incident Management Team C says smoke and flames from the so-called Douthit and West Ash fires might be seen near the city of Chadron. But residents of Whitney, southwest of Chadron, were allowed to return home Sunday.

Officials say the Douthit fire is nearly contained and has charred about 47 square miles. The West Ash fire had blackened more than 91 square miles by Sunday night and was half contained.

Some evacuation orders remain in place for the Wellnitz fire, which has crossed into South Dakota and burned a total of more than 150 square miles in both states.

No injuries have been reported.
