Days after their Republican rivals wrapped up their convention in Florida, Democrats are convening in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Democratic convention begins Monday morning with a light holiday schedule including caucus and council meetings. President Obama will rally the labor vote in Ohio. He'll also be in Louisiana viewing storm damage from Hurricane Isaac.
President Obama brought his re-election campaign to Sioux City on Saturday. A crowd of about 28-people at Morningside College heard him talk about jobs, the economy and healthcare. The president told the crowd the road to the White House goes through Iowa, which is one of a handful of swing states this election. Obama is the first sitting president to visit Sioux City since George W. Bush came here in 2004.
Politics will be on display at the annual Labor Day picnic in Sioux City Monday. It starts at noon at Riverside Park. Among the candidates scheduled to speak are Congressional candidate Christie Vilsack, State Representative Chris Hall, and State House Candidate David Dawson. Woodbury County Supervisors Jackie Smith, Mark Monson and Larry Clausen will also be there, along with County Auditor Pat Gill and Sheriff candidate Doug Boetger.
Two Sioux City bands are inducted into the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Embers were among those honored at a ceremony in Milford Sunday. They've been together for 28 years and nine years after its inception, Rockestra was inducted into the hall of fame. Normally, a group has to have been playing for 25 years to be eligible for induction, but the rules were relaxed for the unique ensemble of orchestra and rock musicians because of their amazing spirit.
