YANKTON, S.D. (KTIV) -

It's an election year but the four legged friends at the Heartland Humane Society Shelter in Yankton, hope you'll cast your vote for them.

They need more room.

Fozzy is a stray cat that's been up for adoption at the Heartland Humane Society for a few weeks. He may not have much room to move around here, but he's one of the lucky ones that got dropped off here.

"We keep any cat that is healthy until we can find a good home for them, and rarely euthanize, and only for health reason," Kerry Schmidt, the Executive Director of the Heartland Humane Society said.

Kerry Schmidt said if Fozzy had been picked up by Yankton Animal Control, he might only get 72 hours to live because of they also have a lack of space.

She says in the last two years, the Humane Society's shelter has taken in about 100 animals, but this year that number has nearly doubled. As a result the shelter has had a hard time keeping up with food and maintenance costs.

That's why the shelter is now competing with charities nationwide to win money from the Chase Community Giving program. It's an online competition that's being held on Facebook.

Schmidt said most of these kennels are usually full throughout the year, in fact there isn't even enough room for dogs. She says if they win, they'll put the money towards building a new shelter.

"You know it's harder to be a smaller shelter in this contest since it's kind of a popularity contest. We'd be thrilled with $10,000 that would ensure that we meet our general budget for this year," Schmidt said.

Schmidt says they've already made it through one round, now all they need are votes. The contest runs from September 6th through the 19th.
