Farmers reminded to take fire precautions at harvest

Posted:
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) -

Nebraska farmers are being reminded to take fire precautions at harvest this year because conditions are so dry.

University of Nebraska-Lincoln experts say it's important that farmers clean and maintain their equipment before and during harvest to reduce the chance of a fire.

Farmers should fire up their combines and other machinery before harvest and check for any worn parts.

During harvest, it's important to clear debris away from the combine at regular intervals.

If a farmer smells smoke, he or she should stop the combine immediately and check for fire or smoldering plants.

Farmers should also make sure they have fire extinguishers ready. Some farmers also decide to keep a tractor nearby, so they can till a fire break if needed.
