DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -
Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz is expected to defend new emergency voting rules he approved in July without seeking public input. The rules would challenge ballots cast by voters who appear on state and federal database lists as noncitizens.
Schultz, a Republican, says the rules make it easier to report fraud. But the Iowa Democratic Party is objecting. It says the rules are too vague and give Schultz too much power.
A legislative rules committee will meet Tuesday afternoon to discuss the rules.
Two civil rights groups have filed suit against the rules. A Polk County judge will hear arguments from them Tuesday afternoon.
