Onawa, IA man cited after police shot his dog

Posted:

There's a new development in the case of a pit bull dog that was shot by a police officer last month in Onawa, Iowa.

The dog's owner has been cited.

Police say Lyle Simpson is charged with harboring a vicious animal and allowing a dog to run at large.

In late August, police say the pit bull and another dog aggressively charged an officer who was in the street checking on the house next door.

The officer shot the pit bull in the jaw and both dogs ran off.

Onawa's police chief says the officer was acting in self-defense.

He was cleared of any wrongdoing.

Simpson's family says he'll appeal the citations when they go to court next week.
