Centsable Health: Easy side dish recipes that are tailgate ready


The football season means it's time to tailgate. Fareway Registered Dietitian Whitney Packebush shared some side dish recipes that are sure to be a hit at any party.


Makes 6 servings


1 (15 ounce) can black beans, drained (or 1 ½ cups cooked beans)

1 (15 ounce) can corn, drained (or 1 ½ cups cooked corn)

1 (16 ounce) jar salsa

Tortilla chips or tortillas



STIR beans, corn and salsa to MIX. SERVE as dip with tortilla chips or ROLL into flour tortilla.

Nutrition information per ½ cup servings: 128 calories; 0.8 g fat; 828 mg sodium, 5.4 g fiber, 27.4 g carbohydrates, 6.4 g protein

Total time: 10 minutes


1 (16 ounce) can refried beans

1 (1 ounce) package taco seasoning

1 cup guacamole

1 (8 ounce) container plain Greek yogurt

1 cup salsa

1 cup shredded cheese

2 Roma tomatoes, diced

½ bunch green onions, sliced

1 (2.25 ounce) can sliced black olives, drained

Tortilla chips

Plastic cups


In a small mixing bowl, MIX taco seasoning and Greek yogurt. Layer according to list below:

Layer 1: 2 Tbsp. refried beans

Layer 2: 2 Tbsp. Greek yogurt and taco seasoning

Layer 3: 2 Tbsp. guacamole

Layer 4: 2 Tbsp. salsa

Layer 5: 2 Tbsp. cheese

Layer 6: 1 tsp. tomatoes

Layer 7: 1 tsp. green onions and 1 tsp. olives

Approximate nutrition information per serving: 155 calories; 9.7 g fat; 3.9 g saturated fat; 16.7 mg cholesterol; 550.7 mg sodium; 10.28 g carbohydrate; 3.9 g fiber; 8.2 g protein
