SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KTIV) -
More than 200 years ago, Mexico and five other nations started the war for independence. That day is marked every year.
Old Crystal Lake Park in South Sioux City, Nebraska, was buzzing with activity today... for the final day of the community's 4th Annual Latin American celebration.
You may think of Cinco de Mayo as one of the biggest celebrations, which it is, but independence is also a big deal.
Six Latin American nations celebrated their freedom over the weekend. On this day, local cowboys showed off their skills for the crowd.
Guests were also treated to traditional Latin cuisine and entertainment. Organizers say, even though it's a celebration of Latin America, everybody's invited... and everybody can appreciate the past.
"Know where Mom and Dad came from When you share cultures with the American people, any nationality, I think is a plus," said Antonio Gomez, an event organizer.
Admission was free, but all the money raised from merchandise and food sales will go to Saint Michael's Church in South Sioux City.
While Mexico was highlighted, five other countries: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Costa Rica and Nicaragua all celebrated their independence from Spain.
