SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

A project started by a local teen gets a major boost.  East senior Taylor Pluim and members of the Mayor's Youth Commission have been collecting donations to clothe Sioux City students in need.

Monday, the Sioux City Police Officers Association donated $1,000 to the cause.

"One of the important things that we want to focus on is programs involving the youth," explained Sioux City Police Officers Association President Brad Gorter.

"My mom has friends who are teachers and they would say that kids come into class with no shoes or coats during the winter," said Pluim.

The project was able to donate 900 articles of clothing with the first $700 it raised.

The police association donates to a different charity once a month and gives away about $18,000 in a given year.

Donations are being accepted at the Chamber of Commerce Building at 101 Pierce Street in Sioux City. Officials ask that the clothes be appropriate sizes for youths.
