Siouxland Habitat Sees Beauty in Neighborhood Eyesores

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

The Siouxland Habitat for Humanity says it has been known for building new homes for low income families....but now it's also fixing up homes that otherwise could have been demolished.

They hope restoring these homes will have a positive impact in some neighborhoods.

"One we get into a neighborhood and start working on a house, then I notice a couple doors down, another house being remodeled, and another house being painted, and so more people are beginning to take pride in their home ownership," said Linda Paterson with Siouxland Habitat for Humanity

Jeremiah Lloyd is the future owner of a home the group is restoring. He's been working in a lot of construction projects for most of his career, but this time, the project is his home.

He says his wife and 4 kids have been moving from apartment to apartment, and have dreamed of owning a home of their own, but they've been struggling to afford one.

"I love the neighborhood, I love this city, and just know my kids will have yards, somewhere to play, they don't have to play in the streets, they don't have to be afraid, it means everything to us," Jeremiah Lloyd said.

Siouxland Habitat says they've expanded their projects, and are still looking for more volunteers. If you would like to volunteer, click on the link here.
