NORFOLK, Neb. (US92) -
The new school year is marking a big birthday for a Norfolk, Nebraska elementary school. This year marks 80 years for Jefferson elementary.
The school hosted a special carnival and open house for students and their families. Former teachers and alumni flipped through old scrapbooks.
Most of Jefferson elementary is new additions, however a portion of the original school still stands and is used on a daily basis.
Jefferson's principal says the 4th grade students helped prepare for the big 80th birthday by digging into the history books.
"We went back through 80 years, and so we looked through the decades at what's happened in history to try and understand what 80 years looks like. And that was pretty amazing to them because it went back a long ways obviously," said Principal Angie Hausmann.
All 69 Jefferson kindergarten students formed an 8 and a zero on the fire escape to pose for a picture.
