SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Mercy Medical Center patients and staff have a new area to relax and enjoy the outdoors on the Mercy campus.
Monday, the new Outdoor Rehabilitation Courtyard was dedicated as part of the 2012 observance of Mercy Day.
The courtyard has been furnished with a water fountain, comfortable chairs, and flowers.
Hospital officials say this area is a calming place for patients on the road to recovery.
"This courtyard will give them an area to practice their walking or wheeling their own wheelchair. Patients will also have speech therapy in the courtyard, improving their ability to communicate and occupational therapy will practice functional tasks that require arm strength and movement. It will also help lift their spirits in a way sunshine and only fresh air can do," Mary Hendriks, the Mercy Rehabilitation Director said.
In honor of Mercy Day, some Mercy employees also did service work at Habitat for Humanity and the Siouxland Community Food Bank.
