SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Protecting your identity is important and it can be a problem for seniors.

On Monday, Siouxland Aging Services hosted an event to help older adults stay protected.

Seniors, 60 and over could bring their documents to get shredded.

Organizers say it's important for seniors to dispose of documents with important information on them.

"They're a very trusting generation so it's very important for them to realize there are a lot of opportunities out there for people to take advantage of them and they certainly will. So the more we can get rid of that stuff in their homes the better it is," Christ Kuchta, the Director of Advocacy and Community Relations with Siouxland Aging Services said.

Seniors could also drop off old or unused prescription drugs.

The goal is to keep the old medicine out of the water supply and out of the hands of people that would mis-use them.

Organizers plan on hosting another event in the spring.
