SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
The League of Cities Conference also gave visitors the chance to learn by exploring Sioux City's downtown. One stop they made, Sioux City's Public Museum.
North, south, east, and west, Sioux City's Public Museum drew in people from every direction this week.
"Davenport, Muscatine, and Knoxville, so it's all over the state," said Steve Hanson, Sioux City Museum Director.
And as visitors walked through the museum's doors, they were greeted to a pleasant surprise.
"I didn't know what to expect. So it was just, right away, lots of displays and things that caught your eye," said Sandy Petersen, Historical Society Vice President.
Sandy Petersen is vice president of a museum in the small southwestern Iowa town of Avoca.
She says that there's major differences between that one and this one.
"It's just very basic. We just kept artifacts and artifacts. And that's what it is, a museum of artifacts. We don't have the stories which is what we need," said Petersen.
Sioux City's Museum director says it's all about displaying history in different ways.
"We have such a broad range of learning devices, from highly interactive to very low interactive, to all kinds of hands-on," said Hanson.
"This is awesome to see that the adults and the kids can all go through and really get something out of everything. So, it's really nice," said Petersen.
Hanson hopes others, like Peterson, can learn from what she's seen here.
"To go back home and say, 'hey, here's one of the things we got out of the conference. Sioux City Public Museum is really a wow museum," said Hanson.
"I know some of these things we can do very easily to improve our museum, and it'd be great," said Petersen.
Sioux City's Museum Director, Steve Hanson, estimates about 50 visitors went on the tour.
