CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa (KTIV) -
We normally reserve a few special days throughout the year to honor our veterans, but Saturday in Correctionville, Iowa, they took the time to recognize those who've served and are currently fighting overseas.
They did that with a small ceremony, telling the history of America's flags and showing how their state's soldiers have battled for them.
A table was set up with letters and signs from students at River Valley Elementary school, thanking them for their service. A large map of Iowa shows the number of lives lost in this state since fighting began after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
"It says that the veterans of the community mean something to them, and that they're willing to take time to say thank you to them in a special way," said SSgt. James Wessler, a retired member of the U.S. Air Force.
Booths were set up to help retired services members with their health benefits and other questions they might have.
