Humane Society president seeks seat on Tyson board

The president of the Humane Society of the United States says he's seeking a spot on Tyson Foods Inc.'s board of directors.

President Wayne Pacelle announced his candidacy for a seat on the meat processing company's board on Tuesday.

Pacelle says he would urge Tyson to commit to a time frame to phase out the confinement of sows in cramped pens known as gestation crates.

Tyson spokesman Gary Mickelson says the company is committed to humane animal treatment and expects the same from farmers who supply it with chickens, hogs and cattle.

The Humane Society of the United States says it owns stock in Tyson Foods and has urged the company to revamp its policies.

Tyson is based in Springdale, Ark.
