SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Sunday kicks off National Fire Prevention Week.
During the week, Sioux City fire fighters will visit elementary schools talking about the dangers of fire.
While they hope they bring those lessons home with them, they have an important message for parents. They're encouraging families to have to have a plan that includes two ways out of their home.
"As a family, you have to practice. They do it in schools, all the time, and the kids, when that fire alarm goes off, the kids know right what to do. So, it's the same way. If we do it at home, they'll know right what to do," explained Jesse Pedersen, a fire department spokesperson.
Fire stations in Sioux City will also host an open house on Sunday, running from one until four.
Also on Sunday, at 3:00, at the fire station off Hamilton, firefighters will demonstrate how fast fire burns and the effectiveness of sprinkler systems.
