SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
City leaders voted 4-1 to raise garbage rates. Gill Hauling requested the increase because of higher fuel prices.
The city signed a long-term contract with Gill in 2006. The company has requested and received rate increases in 2008, 2010, and again this year.
"It seems like every year Gill Hauling comes to the city and talks about how their contracts are not making them money, or this contracts not living up to revenue expectations. Then I guess my question becomes, why do we keep signing additional extensions to this contract," said Stan Sherman.
Residents will pay $14.60 per month. That's a 70-cent increase.
The price of additional garbage cans would also go up by 12-cents to $2.62 a month.
City leaders also agreed to a contract extension through the year 2020.
