The search is underway for a new school superintendent in Norfolk, Nebraska. Dr. Marlene Uhing announced Monday night that she plans to retire after the current school year. The news came as a surprise to the school board, which approved a contract extension through 2014 for Uhing last year. Uhing says she decided to retire for personal and family reasons. She said she wanted to give officials plenty of time to find her replacement.
If you live in Sioux City, your garbage rates are going up. The city council voted four to one to hike the price. Residents will pay $14.60 per month, so it's a $.70 increase. The price of additional garbage cans will also go up $.12 to $2.62 a month. Gill Hauling requested the increase because of higher fuel prices. The council also extended Gill's contract through 2020.
Don't feed the deer or turkeys if you live in Sioux City. City council members approved a feeding ban at their meeting Monday night. City leaders also say the Iowa DNR requires the ban before it takes additional steps to thin the herd. The new ordinance takes effect Saturday. The city set the fine at $100.
A Morningside college student battled it out on "The Voice" in hopes of moving ahead in the competition. Country singer Casey Muessigmann of Spencer, Iowa battled rocker Terry McDermott. The duo sang "Carry On Wayward Son," a classic from the band Kansas. While the judges agreed the performance was stellar, judge Blake Shelton had to choose one. He picked McDermott over Muessigmann.
