HOSKINS, Neb. (KTIV/US92) -
A Siouxland community is facing the reality of reduced hours at its local post office.
The U.S. Postal Service hosted an open forum in Hoskins, Nebraska Tuesday.
This post office had been one of about 13-thousand nationwide slated for closure as a cost-cutting measure, but public outcry forced the U.S.P.S. to look at other options including reduced hours.
Postal officials say a recent survey of Hoskins residents overwhelmingly favored reducing the post office to four hours a day as opposed to closure.
Less than half of Hoskins' residents responded to the survey, which postal officials say has been par for the course in the communities they've surveyed.
Dawn Bayer, with the U.S. Postal Service said, "We were surprised that more people didn't bring in the surveys. But at the same time, the whole world is encompassed by surveys, or maybe they're not locally involved with the post office."
There are more forums scheduled this month at other towns looking at reduced hours including Pilger and Concord in Nebraska.
Postal officials say the new reduced hours will be implemented December First.
