SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Statistics show that Sioux Gateway has mostly been full—nearly 85 percent capacity on flights headed to Chicago. So, Sioux City leaders are discussing ways they bring more options to the airport.
In April, the airport's only air carrier changed from Delta to American. American now offers direct flights to Chicago.
The company has been under fire recently for loose seats on some off its planes, poor performance and its bankruptcy filing.
Council members say none of those issues have really affected American's service to Sioux City.
"Here, we know that our service has been very good and I haven't heard any complaints at all, so it's a good sign locally," said Keith Radig of the Sioux City Council.
In the future, city leaders hope the airport can develop more revenue streams, including a flight program partnership with Western Iowa Tech and the University of North Dakota.
They're also looking into the possibility of adding flights, possibly to Minneapolis, or even the West Coast. At this point, though, they don't know if that means adding a second carrier, or asking American to add destinations.
