NORFOLK, Neb (KTIV/US92) -
A 58-year-old Hoskins, Nebraska man has died and a Norfolk man was injured during a working accident on the Nucor Steel Plant property northeast of Norfolk Tuesday.
Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger says Perry Hoemann of Hoskins was killed when he was struck by a large piece of steel. Unger says Hoemann, who is a private contractor, was dismantling a large piece of old steel equipment with the aid of two Tube City IMS employees who work on the Nucor Property. Hoemann and another man, 49-year-old Harold Claussen Jr of Norfolk, were cutting a counter weight made of steel off of an old piece of machinery, when the weight broke loose and struck both men and the pay loader they were standing in.
Hoemann was pronounced dead at the scene while Claussen was taken to Faith Regional Health Services with possible internal injuries.
The Nucor emergency response team and LifeNet also responded to the accident, which remains under investigation. The accident happened around 4:15 Tuesday afternoon. There's no word on Claussen's condition.
