Yankton, South Dakota School Superintendent Joe Gertsema is publicly apologizing after being arrested over the weekend for drunken driving.
Gertsema was arrested shortly before 1:30 a.m. Sunday at a Highway Patrol checkpoint near Vermillion.
Authorities say he failed a sobriety test.
Gertsema has been Yankton's school superintendent for 23 years.
He told the Press & Dakotan newspaper he's angry with himself, and he apologizes to his family and the community for his "bad decision" to drive after drinking.
