DES MOINES, Iowa (KTIV) -
Farmers are being encouraged to wait until soil temperatures remain below 50 degrees Fahrenheit before applying anhydrous ammonia fertilizer this fall.
With the record early harvest this year, officials with the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says that waiting can help reduce nitrogen loss and better protect the environment.
Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey says if farmers wait for cooler soil temperatures to apply, there's a better chance the fertilizer will stay put and be there for the crop next spring.
