Dog owner tried after police shoot his pit bull

ONAWA, Iowa (KTIV) -

An Onawa, Iowa man who is charged with harboring a vicious animal and allowing a dog to run at large was in court.

Lyle Simpson had a non-jury trial on Tuesday, but no decision has been made.

In late August, police say the pit bull and another dog aggressively charged an officer who was in the street checking on the house next door.

The officer shot the pit bull in the jaw.

A witness said dog was acting "friendly" to the approaching officer when he fired.

But Onawa's police chief says the officer was acting in self-defense and was cleared of any wrongdoing.

The dog survived.
