SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
The Woodbury County Jail is a step closer to getting some much needed upgrades. Not much has changed since the jail was built about 30 years ago.
The Board of Supervisors first talked about making upgrades about 5 years ago, and they officially announced today, they've approved a plan to begin upgrades.
Woodbury County Supervisor Mark Monson says a lot of the equipment is out of date, but renovations will start with focusing on wiring infrastructure, and security equipment inside the jail.
"Right now some doors don't necessarily have a light indicator that says what they are doing, they're just burned out...We're going to go digital with that, right now it's push button, and not working well, so that'll make it a much safer jail for the people that work up there and the inmates there," Mark Monson, a Woodbury County Supervisor said.
Additional improvements include upgrading the camera system, and adding more space for attorney-client meetings.
The project is estimated to cost about $680,000. R-M-L Architects, the firm overseeing the first phase this renovation, wants to finish the project by June of next year.
