MADISON, Neb. (KTIV/US92) -
A Norfolk, Nebraska man is sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison for shooting a woman in her home.
34-year-old Carlos Arevalo-Martinez plead guilty to first-degree assault and a weapon charge in the shooting of Edna Gutierrez Norfolk last February.
A judge sentenced him Wednesday to 25 years for the assault charge and two years for the weapons charge.
He'll be eligible for parole in 13 and half years.
Arevalo-Martinez was taken into custody after a standoff with police.
Prosecutors say before that, he hit Gutierrez in the head with a loaded handgun that discharged hitting her in the head.
Arevalo-Martinez says the shooting was an accident and asked for leniency.
He even suggested in a letter to the judge that he be allowed to go back to South America and take care of his six kids and never return to the U.S.
Gutierrez attended Wednesday's hearing, but did not testify and declined to comment after the hearing.
