Varilek told students about why he's running for the House of Representatives seat.
YANKTON, S.D. (KTIV) -
U.S. House of Representatives candidate, Matt Varilek visited the Yankton High School's AP Government class Thursday.
He graduated from YHS in 1993 and went on to work in Washington D-C for former Senator Tom Daschle and current Senator Tim Johnson.
Varilek told students about why he's running for the House of Representatives seat.
"I remember being in these same seats myself and having great speakers and being excited to know that someone with a background from Yankton could go on to do exciting things and I want encourage these students to try to do the same," Matt Varilek, United States House candidate said.
Varilek also spoke to the students about how he plans to strengthen the middle class and protect federal student aid.
He says if elected he will bring a positive, constructive approach to Washington.
Varilek says he is willing to work with others and tackle issues that he says lawmakers are not focusing on right now, like the Farm Bill and national debt.
"Economic issues are at the top of the agenda, how do we tackle the deficit? I believe that we should do so in a way that doesn't put all of the burden on middle class families because I think right now, Washington is tilted in favor of those at the very top. I don't think we should tackle our deficit by privatizing medicare, Varilek said.
Thursday you can hear from both, Matt Varilek and his opponent, Congresswoman Kristi Noem during the South Dakota Public Broadcasting debate.
It starts at 8 p.m. and will be streamed live on their website.
