Latkes are cooked up by volunteers for Sioux City's Congregation Beth Shalom.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Hundreds gathered at Congregation Beth Shalom for latkes. They're pancakes, but not necessarily for breakfast.
Latkes are deep fried, crispy potato pancakes. They're the main draw for nearly 1,000 people who came out to the dinner event in Sioux City.
Ruth Lebowich, a member of the synagogue and volunteer at the dinner said latkes are traditionally served during Hanukkah.
But, because the weather in December can be unpredictable, they hold their event before the holiday.
"On Hanukkah we eat something that is fried in grease because of the oil we that we lit our candles with for Hanukkah on the menorah," Ruth Lebowich said.
The congregation hopes to raise about $10,000 which will be put toward building maintenance and youth activities at the synagogue.
