SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Sioux City residents will now pay more to have their garbage hauled away. Council members voted to raise the cost of basic services by $1 per month, and raise the costs of other services including yard waste stickers by about 5 to 7 percent.
The added costs come after Gill Hauling requested a 70 cent increase, and the city added its own 30 cent rate hike to help meet its financial obligations.
City leaders say the increase in rate is due largely to increased costs of gasoline that are getting passed down the line.
"These are essentially passed through costs for us, what we pay Gill is essentially charged to the customer. And if there's an increase in the contract, then we need to be able to recoup those costs," said Jade Dundas, public works director for the city of Sioux City.
Dundas says there's a chance the costs could be temporary if the cost of fuel continues to decrease in the future.
