Vice President Biden pays tribute to McGovern calling him an inspiration

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KTIV) -

Vice President Joe Biden says George McGovern should be remembered as the "Father of the modern Democratic Party," saying the former U.S. Senator from South Dakota helped open the party to women, young people and minorities.

Biden spoke during a prayer service Thursday night in Sioux Falls honoring the 1972 Democratic presidential nominee.

Biden said McGovern did what only a handful of people had ever done in this country.

"He summoned to public life. He inspired a whole generation. Not figuratively, literally. A whole generation of leaders to get engaged in the 60's," said Biden.

Biden, himself, said it was McGovern who inspired him to run for U.S. Senate in 1972.

McGovern died Sunday surrounded by family. He was 90. His funeral is Friday in Sioux Falls.
