Two men suspected in shooting an Iowa State Trooper and the Sumner police chief, after robbing the Maynard Savings Bank, are being held in Bremer County on $1 million cash only bond after appearing in court Wednesday morning.
The two men, 19-year-old William Clayton of Osage and 24-year-old Jeremiah Mumford of New Hampton, were taken into custody Tuesday night following a nearly eight hour manhunt that put several schools in lock down and injured two law enforcement officers.
Mumford faces six counts of attempted murder and five counts of terrorism. Clayton faces six counts of aiding and abetting and five counts of terrorism.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety says a robbery at the Maynard Savings Bank was reported at 11:13 a.m. Tuesday. Information about the suspects and their vehicle was sent to out to local authorities, and a firefighter spotted the car a short time later.
Once law enforcement became involved, the suspects led them on a chase that went from Fayette County into Bremer County. The Department of Public Safety says the suspects were firing shots at pursuing officers during the chase.
Two officers, Trooper Mark Domino and Sumner Police Chief Dennis Cain, were hit by the gunfire.
Family members tell KWWL that Cain was taken to Allen Memorial Hospital in Waterloo with severe wounds to his neck, thumb and shoulder. His wife tells KWWL that he is stable, but is still in critical condition. She says he will be transferred from Allen Hospital to another location.
Domino was hit in his bicep, but he continued to chase the suspects. He was treated and released.
The Department of Public Safety says the suspects abandoned their vehicle at about 12:20 p.m. near the Heartland Quarry, which is along Midway Avenue, west of Frederika.
From there, the two suspects ran into a wooded area. Law enforcement set-up a two-mile long perimeter to make sure the suspects couldn't leave the area.
After more than six hours of searching on the ground and through the air, Mumford and Clayton were arrested by two Waterloo officers when they tried to leave the area at about 6:58 p.m. Authorities say they were arrested without incident.
The New Hampton Community School District, Nashua-Plainfield Schools and Sumner-Fredericksburg Middle School and Sumner Elementary School were put on lock down because of the manhunt and the Tripoli Community School District took extra precautions.
Highway 63 northbound was closed between 188 in Bremer County and 346 in Chickasaw County.
Members of more than 20 law enforcement agencies responded and aided in the capture of Mumford and Clayton.
The bank robbery, shootings and chase remain under investigation.
