AMES, Iowa - -
Iowa State senior linebacker Jake Knott is likely out for the season with a torn left shoulder. If he has played his last game as a Cyclone, he went out on top. He was named the Big 12's defensive player of the week after a win over Baylor.
Cyclone head coach Paul Rhoads says Knott had surgery Monday in Chicago. Rhoads says Knott might make it back for a potential bowl game but the Cyclones won't know more until later in the week.
Knott hurt his shoulder against Oklahoma State, but returned and had 11 tackles and forced a fumble in Iowa State's win on Saturday over Baylor.
Injuries are a part of football, but this one is tough for ISU to take.
"He's played through a lot of pain which is a tribute to him, his toughness and his overall selfless desire to be a team player," said Rhoads. "It was never, ever about Jake Knott. It was always about the Iowa State Cyclones."
"It's a sad thing knowing you have a guy like Jake, a team captain, a leader, who plays hard, who gives it up every game it's hard to know he's out," said wide receiver Quenton Bundrage.
"Jake was the anchor of the defense," said defensive back Deon Broomfield. "Any time we needed a play to be made or something to be said to us, he was the guy that did it. As far as the team, he was the leader of the team."
Iowa State (5-3) will host #14 Oklahoma on Saturday at 11:00 AM.
