SMITHLAND, Iowa (KTIV) -
A man is found dead after a building explodes in a Siouxland town.
"The building was fully engulfed, and we saw one fatality," said Curt Larson, Smithland Fire Chief.
A sad scene in Smithland, Iowa Wednesday.
When crews arrived at 421 West Main Street, they found the body of the building's owner, 76 year old Robert E. Jones.
Officals say the victim died as a result of the fire and explosion.
The explosion sent smoke billowing into the sky and had drivers on Highway 141 slowing down to look.
"The sheriff's department has been notified, and they are doing traffic control on the highway here," said Curt Larson, Smithland Fire Chief.
From traffic to fire control, officials had their hands full, fighting the flames.
"Man power would be the biggest problem. It's daytime. At nighttime, you have a lot more people around, home. Man power would be the biggest issue here," said Curt Larson, Smithland Fire Chief.
The cause of the explosion and fire is under investigation by the state Fire Marshall and the Woodbury County Sheriff's Office.
