Work continues on "fish fence" to keep Asian Carp out of Iowa Great Lakes

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV/KUOO) -

Construction of an fish barrier at the Lower Gar Outlet of the Iowa Great Lakes has been underway nearly a month now.

Officials say the project has been coming along nicely, thanks in part to the dry weather and extremely low water levels. The contractor, Christianson Construction, is currently constructing the vertical wing walls for the structure. Once that's done, officials say the main section of the barrier should be ready for installation in another week or two.

The barrier is being constructed in an effort to keep additional Asian carp from getting into the Iowa Great Lakes. Several Asian carp were caught in seining nets this past summer. Since then officials say there has been no further evidence of the invasive species in the Iowa Great Lakes.
