Republican Reps. Jeff Fortenberry and Adrian Smith win re-election

SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KTIV) -

Republican Rep. Jeff Fortenberry won a fifth term by defeating Democrat Korey Reiman in the 1st district. He was one of three Republican incumbents seeking re-election to the U.S. House.

Republican Rep. Adrian Smith has been re-elected to a fourth term representing western Nebraska's sprawling 3rd congressional district.

Smith defeated Democratic challenger Mark Sullivan on Tuesday to retain his position in the district, which covers more than three-fourths of the state.

Smith, a sixth-generation Nebraskan, pitched himself to voters as a "committed conservative" who opposed tax increases and abortion.

Sullivan is a farmer and cattle feedlot owner from Doniphan. He pointed to his background as a lifelong resident of the district and argued that voters in the Republican-dominated district should have a choice of candidates.

The district covers 70 of Nebraska's 93 counties, and includes the cities of Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, North Platte and Scottsbluff.
