LE MARS, Iowa (KTIV) -

Parents in two northwest Iowa school districts got their last chance to express their opinion, and ask questions, about the possible merger of their high schools.

School boards at Le Mars Gehlen, and Spalding Catholic, are considering merging their high schools.

Wednesday night's meeting was meant to answer questions about the move, which still isn't set in stone.

Critical issues they addressed, if the two schools merge, include: academics, the fate of buildings in both districts, and the future of scholarships that are set up at both schools.

A big concern was transportation, providing busing after sports and other extra-curricular activities, between two towns that are about 25-miles apart.

Many parents, in both districts, favor the move.

"Just seems to keep opening more and more doors as of what the possibilities are that what could happen with their strengths combined with our strengths. It's nothing but good things for our kids down the road," said Steve Derocher, Gehlen Parent.

"Taking the best ideas from both schools and combing that into one school system, you can only improve on what you've already got," said Lori Budden, Spalding Parent.

The two school boards will submit a plan to the Bishop in December and vote in January. If approved, the change would take place next fall.
