MOC-FV & Western win at state; Sioux Center & Gehlen fall

MOC-FV beat Red Oak, 3-1, in a first round match at the state volleyball tournament on Thursday. MOC-FV beat Red Oak, 3-1, in a first round match at the state volleyball tournament on Thursday.

MOC-Floyd Valley enjoyed a successful State Volleyball Tournament debut with a 25-19, 23-25, 25-12, 25-9 victory over Red Oak in Class 3A State Volleyball first round play.

Alexis Conaway had 15 kills to lead the Dutch while Payton Hilton added 13 kills and 18 digs. Angela Mahoney led Red Oak  (27-7) with 7 kills.

MOC-Floyd Valley (31-8) faces Mount Vernon Friday at 3:30 p.m. on Court One in the 3A semifinals.

Sam Barz put down 17 kills to lead Union past Sioux Center in a five set, 25-14, 17-25, 25-8, 23-25, 15-13 victory Thursday afternoon in Class 3A first round play at the Iowa State Volleyball Tournament.

Jillian Estes led Sioux Center with 12 kills and 11 digs. The Warriors, making their first state tournament appearance since 1999, end the year at 31-7.

Union, 34-7, advances to the Class 3A semifinals for the second-straight year. The Knights face top-ranked Mediapolis Friday 3:30 p.m. on Court One.

Western Christian topped Treynor 25-15, 25-13, 25-8, in a first round Class 2A match at the state volleyball tournament on Thursday. The match lasted less than an hour.

The Wolfpack enter the semifinals for the twelfth straight year, which is best in the state of Iowa. Western is also at state for the 30th time, most ever in Iowa history.

The Wolfpack (42-3) will play in the 2A semifinals on Friday at 5:15 in Cedar Rapids.

Gehlen Catholic lost their first round match in the Class 1A state volleyball tournament, 3-0, to Tripoli on Thursday night. It was a rematch of last year's state championship game.

The seventh-ranked Jays end the season with a 21-11 record while Tripoli moves into the semifinals at 36-5.

Tripoli won 25-19, 25-11, 25-21.

Morgan Whitehead led Gehlen with five kills, while Hanna Kessenich and Katelin Langel each added four. Setter Abby Freking had 13 assists.
