Spirit Lake celebrates after a 17-10 win over Kuemper Catholic in the 2A semifinals on Saturday.
CEDAR FALLS, IA (KTIV) -
Spirit Lake fended off a late charge by Kuemper Catholic, 17-10, in the Class 2A football semifinals.
Spirit Lake led 10-0 at halftime. Cody Poock had a 44-yard touchdown run for the Indians and Brett Cochran-Bray added a 27-yard field goal.
"We get to spend another week practicing together," said Spirit Lake head coach Josh Bolluyt. "We get to spend some more time together. The thing in football that not everybody gets to know is when your last game's going to be. It's nice to know that our guys are going to have their last practices this week and their last game and they can prepare to have their best game of the year."
The Indians, in the finals for the second straight year, will play for the title on Friday at 2:00 PM.
A pair of Tucker Culjat first-half touchdown runs and two field goals by Jon Meyerring carried Council Bluffs St. Albert past Emmetsburg in a Class 1A semifinal game Saturday, 18-7.
The E-Hawks turned the ball over twice, fumbling the quarterback-center exchange at the St. Albert one late in the fourth quarter and missing a chip shot field goal.
St. Albert led, 18-0, in the third quarter when Emmetsburg finally scored when Andrew Wellick ran around the right end for a 10-yard touchdown.
"I thought earlier we weren't nearly as good as when we walked off the field tonight," said Emmetsburg head coach Mike Dunlap. "We've come a long ways. These seniors have given us tremendous leadership and done a great job for us all year long."
St. Albert will play top-ranked Iowa City Regina (13-0) in the Class 1A title game next Friday morning. Emmetsburg finishes at 11-2.
