A man is in jail after an eight-hour standoff with police in Hawarden, Iowa this weekend. It started Saturday night when a woman told police that 31-year-old Paul Long had assaulted her and threatened her with a handgun. She said Long told her police would have to shoot him if they came inside the house. Officers eventually came in and found Long hiding in the attic. He was arrested and charged with aggravated domestic abuse, assault and child endangerment.
Our weather has taken a turn towards winter. After climbing into the 70's on Saturday, temperatures dipped into the 20's on Sunday when a cold front moved into the region. More cold weather is in store Monday, with a forecast high of 36 in Sioux City before temperatures climb back into the upper 40's and lower 50's by mid-week.
A group of volunteers is helping Siouxland military veterans in need. The volunteers run the Disabled American Veterans thrift store on Military Road. The local DAV has 360 members who sort through donations and reach out to local veterans. Money made in the thrift store is used to drive veterans to VA clinics in Omaha and Sioux Falls.
Sunday was Veteran's Day and many will observe the occasion Monday. A ceremony to honor veterans will be held at 11:00 Monday morning at the Woodbury County Courthouse. The post office will be closed along with many government offices and banks in observance of the holiday.
