LAKE CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

We have the latest on the cause of a Lake City, Iowa fire that tragically left four family members dead, including three young children.

Officials say the fire started sometime before 1:45 Tuesday morning at 703 South Illinois Street.

Lake City's fire chief, Mel Alcox, says a lamp cord got damaged after it was folded in a hide-a-bed couch.

The cord was plugged into a nearby wall.

It shorted, causing the couch and nearby wall to catch on fire.

"It wasn't a common thing. It was too bad that that shorted out, but there was a lot of factors that just, they all stacked up, and it just happened," said Mel Alcox, Lake City Fire Chief.

Another one of those factors, the living room, where the fire started, was being remodeled.

Alcox says that with plaster and sheet rock gone, an "exposed ceiling" allowed the fire to spread quickly.

There were also no working smoke detectors in the room.

This Saturday, funeral services will be held for 22 year old Tyra Pierson, her 11 month old son Xavier Pierson, and Tyra's little sister and brother, eight year old Madison Pierson and three year old Wyatt Pierson.

They will be held at 10:30 a.m. at Lake City Union Church.

The visitation will be Friday from four to seven at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City.

A private burial will be held at a later date.
