Spirit Lake trailed 7-0 at the half, then scored all 17 of their points in the third quarter. Brett Cochran-Bray kicked a 20-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3 early in the second half.
The fifth-ranked Indians (13-1) took the lead on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Paul Brown to Nick Amundson to make it 10-7. Brown then ran for a touchdown and Spirit Lake was up 17-7.
Mediapolis scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 17-13. With five seconds left in the game, Spirit Lake ran out the clock and took a safety to make the final score 17-15.
"I'm so incredibly proud, this is so unbelievable," said Spirit Lake head coach Josh Bolluyt. "It's kind of a feeling of a high and of this team will never play another game together. We had fun together, and that's what its about."
"This is the greatest feeling in the world, said Spirit Lake senior running back Cody Poock. "Coming off last year's loss, that was probably the worst feeling in the world. But this year, it feels ten times better."
"I feel top of the world right now, cloud nine," added senior quarterback Paul Brown. " Wouldn't trade it for the world."
Brown completed 14 of 18 passes for 213 yards. Brysonn McCabe had five receptions for 90 yards for Spirit Lake.
