SIOUX CITY -- -
Briar Cliff University has acquired the athletic and golf dome, located in South Sioux City, Nebraska. The site will provide the university with a year-round indoor training and recreational facility.
The addition of the complex not only expands campus and recreational space, it also alleviates much of the strain on the university's Newman Flanagan Center as athletic teams now have the ability to train at the South Sioux complex. BCU plans to use the 44,000 square foot dome, which was built in 2002, primarily as an indoor practice facility for its outdoor athletic teams including baseball, softball, track, and golf, among others. It will also provide an inclement weather practice option for sports such as football and soccer. However, the dome will serve the needs of more than just student-athletes. It will also serve as a great space for the larger campus community and further advance the institution's intramural and recreational programs.
"The addition of this facility to our campus provides students, athletic programs, and various recreational activities with unprecedented opportunities and capabilities that have not previously been available in our history at BCU," said Steve Janowiak, Briar Cliff's Vice President for Student Development.
The acquisition of the dome displays Briar Cliff's focus on overall facility enhancement and is an example of an innovative way of satisfying the university's athletic and recreational needs by utilizing the resources and partnerships available throughout Siouxland.
"A continuous theme in Briar Cliff's strategic vision is that the BCU campus will be wherever learning, working and living can take place. In this respect, the dome serves as an extension of the main BCU campus and the facilities we have for students, as well as a clear commitment to cooperation with others in Siouxland," said Briar Cliff President Beverly Wharton.
This acquisition, along with the partnerships that Briar Cliff has recently established with both the Siouxland Y and the University of South Dakota's DakotaDome, collectively demonstrates the institution's progress and its dynamic strategic vision to serve its students, its campus community and all of Siouxland. BCU will begin using the facility full time in the next couple of weeks.
