GUILTY: Jerome Power guilty of killing Cedar Rapids neighbor

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -

A Cedar Rapids man was found guilty of first-degree murder Tuesday.

Jerome Power was convicted in the strangling death of 68-year-old Doris Bevin.

Bevin was killed in her home in 2010.

The defense asked for a mistrial twice, but ultimately the judge decided the jury has not spent enough time deliberating to warrant a mistrial.

Power's sentencing is set for Jan. 7.

Power was found inside Bevins' apartment when Cedar Rapids Police responded in September of 2010.

Bevin was found unconscious on the floor with flannel pants wrapped around her neck. She died the next day.

A medical examiner found the cause of death to be asphyxiation by strangulation.

Power's outbursts in the courtroom included holding up a handwritten sign accusing another man of Bevin's murder as well as pouring water on his attorney, Steve Addington, as jurors were being excused for deliberation.
