As you prepare your Thanksgiving feast, there's a lot to think about. Turkey, stuffing, and pumpkin pie. But, what will you drink with your dinner?
"I'm back out here at WineStyles at Lakeport Commons with WineStyles Co-owner Jerry Janssen," said Matt Breen. "Jerry, we are now getting toward Thanksgiving toward Christmas, trying to start pairing wines with our Thanksgiving turkey or our holiday ham. Where do you start because there are so many different wines you can choose?"
"The turkey fair and the holiday season are fun because you can resort back to white wines along with the reds because it is winter out but red wines not so necessary when you are talking turkey and ham," said Janssen. "In our house, we like to go with white wines. We like to go with an oakier or a buttery style Chardonnay, more of a heavy Chardonnay, goes wonderful with turkey. And the red wines, Pinot Noirs seem to stand out. They go great with a ham as well as turkey and they are more of a lighter style of red wine. You can always go a little bit heavier too with a Zinfandel with your ham, it will overpower turkey, so I don't know if it would be a good suggestion for turkey. And one that's kind of unusual, a lot of people don't know about the Gewurztraminer is very, very good when you get talking turkey and ham."
"Now as we get toward Christmas and as we get toward Thanksgiving, we think of the meal but we also have to think of what you can put under the tree come Christmas time and you've got some holiday options for those folks out there?" Breen said.
"Absolutely," Janssen said. "We are a gift shop as well. We have a lot of Christmas items. The Santa Pants are great. It's a great way to show up at a friend's house or give to a friend and say Merry Christmas. The shoes are another item that's very, very popular. This is a bottle holder. So you can gift it with the bottle in it. The shoes all have different personalities. So depending on the personality of the person that you are giving it too. They make a great gift item. We do a lot of cork cages. A lot of people keep their corks. We have many different designs for cork cages. We also do a lot of custom gift baskets and those are very popular during the holiday season."
"And if folks come in, you can help them out and pick the wines that are going to go in those gift baskets," Breen said. "Absolutely," Janssen said. "We customize them for the way that you want them, for the dollar amount that you want to spend and make them up and it makes a great gift item."
