NEAR SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (KTIV) -
Firefighters from several Siouxland departments spent the holiday battling flames.
Around three Thursday afternoon, a fire sparked in a harvested corn field at 2025 Elk Creek Road near Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
Firefighters say the dry conditions caused 25 to 30 acres to burn. The gusty winds spread the flames quickly, threatening three homes.
"We're spending a little extra time out here today, going over and over the edge of the fire, cause with the 25 to 30 mile hour winds, those embers could carry quite a ways to a home or to another field," said Anthony Gaul, Sergeant Bluff Fire Chief.
Firefighters from Salix, Bronson, Lawton, and the airport were called in to assist Sergeant Bluff. The cause is under investigation.
