Morningside is one of two unbeaten teams left in the FCS.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
In the NAIA Football Championship Series, Morningside will host the defending national champions from Saint Xavier next Saturday in the semi-finals. It's the second time in school history the Mustangs are in the semis.
The 3rd ranked Mustangs held off 10th ranked Southern Oregon's upset bid, coming back and winning 47-44 in overtime to advance. Morningside surrendered 24 unanswered points, before the game headed to overtime tied at 41.
In OT, Joel Nixon hit Joel McCabe in the endzone for the game winning touchdown, keeping the Mustangs season alive.
"It's definitely a boost of confidence, but I mean, we've always play with confidence," Colby Henderson said. "But, to beat a team like that, I mean luckily we played at home, but to beat a team like that is great and to move on is even better."
"It was our goal. Me coach Pole, talked before the game and you know our goal was to play in December. Neither of us have ever played a December football game. We got our wish and now we're going to make the best of it."
Kick off is scheduled for noon at Olsen Stadium. As a result of the game, the Morningside basketball games against Concordia have been pushed back. The women will now tip-off at 5 p.m. The men follow at 7 p.m.
