The students say it feels good to help out.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Third, fourth, and fifth graders at Sioux City's Sunnyside Elementary School are helping to stock the shelves at the Food Bank of Siouxland for the holidays.
The students are in a heated competition to see which class can donate the most canned food, diapers, and personal hygiene items.
The students say it feels good to help out.
"When you get older you kind of want to look back on your childhood and know you didn't just spend all your days doing nothing but you helped people," Hana Oldroyd said.
"It's going to feel really cool because we know that mostly all the students are donating," says Alexa Ringling.
"You feel good about your self just having all this stuff that you gave to the kids that are in the families that are less fortunate," Alec Patino said.
Right now, the school has collected nearly 4,000 items which is more than double from last year's total.
The class that gives the most, get's an extra recess.
