UPDATE: Covidien expansion to bring 30 jobs to Norfolk, NE plant

A Norfolk, Nebraska, medical supplies manufacturer has cut the ribbon on an expansion of their current facility that will bring more than two dozen new jobs to the area.

Covidien has been a part of the Norfolk community since 1961 specializing in the manufacture of medical products such as hypodermic needles and syringes. They've previously operated under the names of Sherwood Medical and Tyco Healthcare.

Thursday, Covidien leaders, along with other state and local officials, cut the ribbon on a 37,500 square foot expansion to the existing Norfolk plant, which will bring along with it 30 new jobs and enough space to add three new lines of syringes. Company leaders say the new additions will make the Norfolk plant the only one in the U.S., possibly the world that makes every size of syringe. Jim Clemmer, Covidien Pres. Of Medical Supplies said, "But here in Norfolk, because we have a good engineering background, people could do things with the metallurgy needed and the presses and molds needed to do kind of a line production facility, full."

Among those attending the ribbon cutting was Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman who commended Covidien for bringing more employment opportunities to an area and a state that is growing faster than ever before. Gov. Dave Heineman, (R) Nebraska said, "We want to make sure there are jobs here in Nebraska. Covidien is doing that. Other industries are doing that. And, it takes a business friendly environment, a good tax climate, a great work ethic and a great education system."

Covidien leaders say because the Norfolk plant is so successful, it may come up on the expansion list again in the future.
